A 15-minute walk from Leipzig city centre and you have arrived at one of the most renowned zoological gardens in Europe.
If you would like to experience the stars of "Elegant, Tiger & Co." live and up close, then you should not miss a visit to Leipzig Zoo.
The conversion to the zoo of the future began 20 years ago and many projects have already been realised. The formerly ubiquitous cages have almost completely disappeared from the scene. Today you can observe the animals almost as if they were in the wild.
The elephant temple "Ganesha Mandir", the tiger taiga, the Kiwara savannah and Pongoland should be mentioned here as examples.
Pongoland was created in close cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Website on Pongoland).
At the facility, which is the largest of its kind in the world at 30,000 square metres, scientists are researching the behaviour of the great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans).
In five outdoor enclosures and the 3,250 square metre tropical hall, you can observe the animals and look over the scientists' shoulders as they research our ancestors.
In 2007, ground was broken for the latest project of the Zoo of the Future, the construction of the Gondwanaland tropical adventure world.
In Europe's largest tropical hall with 16,000 square metres, you can enter the world of the primeval continent Gondwana with its rich animal and plant world. Whether on foot, by boat or over suspension bridges between the treetops of the tropical forest, Gondwanaland will transport you to the prehistoric times of our world.
You can purchase tickets directly from us at the reception.
